There’s something about vintage jewelry that makes girls swoon. We spend our lives searching for our person and then we spend what seems like 30 seconds looking for the piece of jewelry that will be a permanent attachment signifying our love?
Somehow it seems like that commitment should be more thought out. No? I met this lovely ring in the midst of my own engagement ring quest, and what a quest it was. Meeting this ring was similar to that love at first sight experience so many people talk about. I truly almost passed out. I was at a jewelry show in Las Vegas meeting a group of colleagues for dinner. While waiting for drinks in a noisy (and dark) bar a girlfriend was trying it on, “Holy shit, Liz look at this!” as she waves it gallantly in front of my eyes. The funny thing about this ring is that I’ve never been pegged to fall for a pear shaped diamond. When you are responsible for inventorying an entire store with vintage jewelry it takes a lot to impress you. I love European cut diamonds due to their age and romantic history of being cut by candle light with a foot pedal but this stone was clearly different. It glowed and flashed, and whispered…..”I am yours….”
It was then passed to me for the try on portion of our meeting. It fit. As I sat there staring deep into the facets and perfect color the story came. The story is the icing on the cake of this beloved ring. “It’s a 3.02 Golconda IIa (type 2 a) D, VS1….. (wait for it)…. in a Tiffany & Co. Mount.” Cue little girl squeals. Eeeeeeeek! Now let me break this down for you in non-jeweler speak. The ring is a vintage Tiffany & Co ring circa early turn of the 19th century. The diamond is one of the most rare diamonds one could ever hope to find. A Golconda type IIa diamonds are the most valued and purest type of diamonds. These represent only 3% of the worlds diamonds. Some of the most famous diamonds are Golconda type IIa, including the Hope Diamond.
It was a thrilling find! The process for purchasing it was and even more interesting experience. Needless to say I ended up with a different engagement ring that I love even more. It’s amazing how if you have found the right person they will find the right ring.
